As humans, we constantly fall into the trap of tomorrow. “I don’t want to do that thing right now, I’ll do it tomorrow”. We wait, procrastinate and tell ourselves that tomorrow is almost here so we can just dump things into Tomorrowland. Well, I’m here to break all your hearts with the terrible truth that tomorrow does not exist.
Before you dismiss my premise as madness here me out. When does tomorrow actually get here? When midnight hits? No that’s today. And 11:59pm that was yesterday. Tomorrow is just poof gone. That thing that you don’t want to do today, guess what? as soon as midnight comes it is today all over again. We are only truly given today and yesterday. Tomorrow is just a dream, a figment of our imagination. Once we accept that tomorrow doesn’t exist we can tap into our true potential and become more productive. Have you ever heard the saying “If you are early you are on time, if you are on time you’re late and if you're late you missed it” well early is yesterday, on time is today, and late is tomorrow What can you do to turn more tomorrows into today's and yesterday's? Here are 5 actionable steps: Start your day earlier Wake up!! We all know that the early bird catches the worm and yet we sleep in because we know we aren’t bird and our meals can seamlessly appear at our doors (pun intended). Starting your day earlier is actually a two-part task. It's 1 part waking up earlier and 1 part going to bed earlier. The hours of sleep we need per night won't change either will how tired and unproductive we become due to lack of sleep. What we can change is when we go to bed and when we wake up. I challenge you to go to bed at 10pm tonight and wake up at 6am ( 6:30pm the latest) your body won’t be used to it , you will want to press snooze, but try your best to stick to it! Manage your time Tic-toc, tic-toc… time is money! No, seriously it is. Over the next 24 hours, I challenge you to write down everything you do and how much time you spend doing it. I 100% guarantee you will come to find that you are wasting time in quite a few areas. This exercise inst to embarrass you and make you feel bad about wasting time, but to show you how much time you have on your hand that you can instantly take advantage of. Schedule, Schedule, More schedule! Living by the calendar isn’t the sexiest thing but is indeed one of the most productive things. When you have things pre-planner with specific time block it becomes a lot easier to get these things done. They have a time, place and a duration. We all have smartphones that come with calendars, emails that come with calendars or can purchase a notebook calendar from the store. Take advantage of this tool! Accountability Growing up we have our guardians and teachers to be accountable to us. They remind us to clean our rooms, to wash the dishes, to eat our food and even to take showers! Over time, that accountability and guidance decrease by a lot. As a part of being more productive, we should always try to have some form of accountability buddy that can help us keep track of goals and tasks. Do one thing at a time Yes, we all want to be known as multitaskers but doing one thing at a time actually makes you way more productive. So instead of stretching yourself too thin to think or focus create tasks that allow you to start and FINISH before you move on to another task. Need a wake-up buddy or accountability buddy?
